TV Humboldt Hits the Times-Standard's Radar
by Paul Benson
November 28, 2008

Rising slowly but surely from seeming obscurity, TV Humboldt was duly noticed and acknowledged last week by the Times-Standard (read the article here).

I've been told the article doesn't make it clear enough what exactly TV Humboldt is, so I wrote a letter to the editor, which was (finally) published in the Times-Standard this morning. You can read it here, but to save you the trouble, a new and improved version of my letter to the editor is included below:

Thanks to the Times-Standard for the article. Amundsen conveyed the spirit of my project well.

However, I've been told the article doesn't make it clear enough what specifically TV Humboldt is, so I'd like to state that clearly here.

TV Humboldt is a local TV station that comes to you over the web, rather than broadcast or cable. To tune in, go to
tvhumboldt.com  .

Also, I was quoted to say that consolidation of media ownership is a good thing, which is a considerable misunderstanding of my position. Too much American media is owned by too few, which is at the heart of why our national media is so distrusted by liberals and conservatives alike. If we value freedom and diversity of expression, which we must if we expect our other freedoms to endure, then we should oppose further consolidation of media ownership. It's pretty simple: diverse ownership ensures diverse speech, by spreading the power widely. Part of what makes our local media particularly good compared to other places is that we still have plenty of locally-owned outlets, and THAT'S what I was saying should be preserved and built upon.

Which is a big part of what my projects aim to do, by developing a new paradigm of media around "web 2.0" principles.
